Demarest Elementary School in Bloomfield, New Jersey has won the EPA’s Energy Star National Building Competition. The school was chosen over 3,000 schools, government buildings, and businesses that competed in the competition this year because of its 52 percent energy reduction in 2012, which was the largest reduction of all the competitors.
“The impressive results of the National Building Competition help show that any building can take simple steps to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings where we all work, play, and learn,” said EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe. “All of the participants in the Energy Star National Building Competition are finding more and more ways to cut energy use, saving thousands of dollars and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
In this year’s competition, energy costs were cut by more than $50 million, saved over three billion kBtus of energy, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the amount of electricity used in more than 43,000 homes.
