Manchester United scores sustainability standards hat-trick - 31 July, 2012.

With the eyes of the world on Old Trafford during the London 2012 Olympic football tournament, Manchester United has been awarded a newly-launched international sustainability certification.

The club is the first in the UK to gain the ISO20121standard which recognises improved sustainability throughout the entire event management cycle.

Manchester United's chief operating officer, Michael Bolingbroke said:

"Manchester United is delighted to have achieved this certification. Sustainability is something about which we care passionately and it's a great achievement to be setting the standard in the events sector. Everyone at the club worked incredibly hard to ensure that this certification was achieved and we look forward to continuing our efforts in this field."

In its environmental policy statement the club sets out objectives to monitor, measure and reduce energy and waste levels. It also intends to educate those affiliated with the club about its sustainable development and aims to ensure that, "sustainable event management measures have a direct positive financial impact."

The certification supersedes the BS8901 standard it already held. Manchester United can now boast a treble in its sustainability trophy cabinet, having already been awarded the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (ISO14001) and the Carbon Trust Standard.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said:

"Everyone at the Club is committed to tackling environmental and social issues at regional, national and international level, using the Manchester United brand to leverage support and create awareness of the issues facing the planet."
